Dragon Age: The Veilguard, BioWare’s latest action-RPG, won’t be receiving any downloadable expansions. The developer has confirmed that its attention is now fully focused on the next entry in the Mass Effect series. The Veilguard, released on October 31, 2024 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X, has been a significant success, becoming BioWare’s most popular game on Steam to date.
No DLC Plans for Dragon Age: The Veilguard
In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Dragon Age: The Veilguard creative director John Epler shared that the studio would not be pursuing any DLCs or expansions for the game. BioWare is redirecting its resources and efforts towards developing the next Mass Effect game instead. Although Epler didn't reveal specifics about the upcoming Mass Effecttitle, the decision underscores the studio’s commitment to the next chapter in the beloved sci-fi franchise.
Dragon Age Remaster Thoughts
Epler also touched on the idea of remastering the earlier Dragon Age games, akin to how Mass Effect Legendary Editionbundled the trilogy with enhanced visuals. While he expressed interest in seeing the original Dragon Age games receive the same treatment, he also acknowledged that remastering the first two games, which used the custom Eclipse engine, would be a more complex task compared to Mass Effect, which was built on the Unreal Engine.
However, Epler kept the door open by saying, “Never say never,” leaving some hope for fans of the original Dragon Agetitles.
Next Mass Effect Game
The next installment in the Mass Effect series, which doesn’t yet have an official title, was first teased with a trailer at The Game Awards 2020. Michael Gamble, executive producer for the project, recently stated that the next Mass Effect will maintain the mature tone of the original trilogy and aim for "photorealistic" visuals. However, BioWare has been tight-lipped about the specifics of the storyline or release timeline.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard's Success
Upon launch, Dragon Age: The Veilguard became BioWare's biggest Steam launch, reaching a peak of 70,000 concurrent players on the platform within the first day. Its success marks a strong comeback for the Dragon Age series, which had been dormant since 2014’s Inquisition.
While expansions are off the table for The Veilguard, the studio’s shift in focus to Mass Effect leaves fans eagerly awaiting updates on both franchises.
